Real estate market rebounding

By Lea Hartley Team
Feb 18, 2012

The Park City Board of REALTORS shut the book on the 2011 real estate market, releasing their annual report on last year's number of sales, sales prices and number of foreclosures. 2011 sales increased by a total of six percent from the year before pulling in a total of $1,077,426,368, making it the seventh year real estate sales exceeded the one billion dollar mark.

Though numbers were not as high as the peak in 2005 of more than $2 billion, realtor confidence is growing in Park City. More are ready to believe Park City real estate has reached its bottom and the market is starting to climb its way out from the low point in 2009, where total sales fell to $867,230,118.

"I think this report is good news," said Park City Board of REALTORS president Tami Whisker. "I feel like we're starting to see signs of stabilization in certain areas, which is amazing."

Art-Center Recipe: Take Log Cabin, Skew, Inflate

By Lea Hartley Team
Feb 15, 2012

Park City, the Utah mountain town best known for catering to skiers and the Sundance Film Festival, now wants to attract art lovers by housing its local art center in a towering, half-twisted log cabin.

The Kimball Art Center, a 35-year-old art nonprofit now in a former garage, has hired the Danish architect Bjarke Ingels to design its new home, according to its board. The $10 million-plus expansion project, which incorporates the garage, will create larger galleries for the Kimball's art exhibits, a sunken theater for dance performances and a sculpture park located atop a grassy roof terrace.

The Kimball has no permanent collection, but its show of Ansel Adams's early landscape photographs attracted large crowds a couple of years ago, as did an exhibit of works by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol lent by major local collectors.

Bjarke Ingels's plans for overhauling the Kimball Art Center in Park City, Utah, involve an 80-foot tower, seen in a rendering.

Artist Anstead planning interactive eBook about Park City

By Lea Hartley Team
Feb 14, 2012

Although Stewart Anstead is an American Fork-based artist who grew up in Chico, Calif., he has an affinity for Park City.

His acrylic paintings of various Summit County scenes have been on exhibit at the Rich Haines Gallery on Main Street for more than 10 years, and he, his wife and four children have made scheduled pilgrimages from Utah County to Summit County to take advantage of the skiing, the Alpine Slide, the hiking trails and the fine dining.

Three years ago, Anstead found himself thinking about creating a new project that pays tribute to Park City.

He decided a book would be the best way to go, but unlike other art books, this one wouldn't just be a collection of paintings, captions and an artist statement. He decided to make the book, whose working title is "My Park City," an interactive work that would not only show his works, but includes comments and photographs from people who love this unique silver-mine town.

National Geographic's World's 25 Best Ski Towns

By Lea Hartley Team
Feb 12, 2012

Park City, Utah

Photograph by Justin Olsen, Canyons Resort

Best For: Cinephile families with a range of abilities

Home to the U.S. Ski Team, three sprawling ski resorts, and Utah’s feathery, desert-dry powder, Park City has established itself as one of the premier ski towns in America. A 19th-century mining outpost turned glossy tourism boomtown, its chairlifts launch directly from downtown, where a skier's bridge delivers you to the city's historic Main Street and its lineup of high-end restaurants, boutiques, and art galleries.

More than anywhere in the state, Park City has a vibrant, sophisticated bar scene. Think jazz and martinis. The Sundance Film Festival arrives every January, when movie stars abound and the town becomes known as “No Parking City.” Fortunately, shuttle service from the Salt Lake City airport (45 minutes away) and free buses to the ski hills make car-free trips here possible.

Park City Mountain Resort is the “right there” option, with access from town, four terrain parks for snowboarders and freestylers, night skiing, a cutting-edge ski school, and remarkably well-rounded terrain, from gentle beginner runs to powder-filled bowls that rival fellow Wasatch Mountain areas Alta and Snowbird. Deer Valley, only one mile away, is unapologetically upmarket. Its skier numbers are capped, grooming is scrupulous, on-mountain restaurants are gourmet, and snowboards are not allowed (no word on baggy pants, but suffice it to say, there is no terrain park). The Canyons, four miles from town, is the ever-expanding upstart that has quickly grown to become the largest ski area in Utah. Impressively, each of Park City’s areas offer a hundred or more runs, bevies of high-speed lifts, and around 3,000 feet of base-to-summit vertical.
